Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference August 15-18
The 2011 Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference will be held August 15-18 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.
This year's program will include presentations on the limits of federalism, use of neuroscience evidence in the courtroom, historical overviews of search and seizure law, the future of the courts, and a retrospective on 40 years of women in the law. Supreme Court Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and Ruth Bader Ginsburg will participate in the program.
The first day of the conference will feature the Bankruptcy Judges Education Program, including the following session:
- The Condition of the Residential Real Estate Market --- How It Will Affect Your Docket and How Your Docket Will Affect It
- The Mortgage Meltdown in the Courts: How Did We Get Here and Where Do We Go From Here?
General conference sessions throughout the remainder of the conference include the following lectures:
- Federalism in the 21st Century: Balancing States' Rights with Federal Power
- The Promises and Perils of Neuroscience Evidence in the Courtroom
- The National Pilot Program for Cameras in the Federal Trial Courts: An Important First Step or a Missed Opportunity?
- Search and Seizure in the 21st Century: Developments in the 50 Years Since Mapp v. Ohio
- Funding the Budget: Crisis in FY2012 and Beyond
- The Federal Courts in 2031 -- Making the Future Happen
- A Reenactment of Bradwell v. Illinois
- Forty Years after Reed v. Reed: Where Did the Constitutional Law of Gender Discrimination Come From, and Where has it Taken Us?
There will also be an optional IT Awareness program offering an introduction to iPads, smartphones, laptops and netbooks, and a more in-depth look at court uses for the iPad.
Conference attendees will include judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the federal district and bankruptcy courts within the circuit, lawyer representatives of the federal bar practicing in these courts, court staff, and special guests.
The lawyer representatives at the conference represent the federal bar practicing before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and/or the federal trial and bankruptcy courts in the 15 judicial districts within the circuit. Federal Public Defenders and U.S. Attorneys are also invited. Attorneys interested in becoming a lawyer representative should check with their local court.
