On the Road with the Second Circuit in Vermont
The Second Circuit Court of Appeals will "ride circuit" next month with its first-ever hearing in Vermont.
Second Circuit Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs recently announced that a three-judge panel will hold court in the United States Courthouse and Post Office in Rutland, Vermont on Friday, October 5, 2012.
The panel will hear the following appeals in the newly renovated and restored historic courtroom on the second floor starting at 10 a.m.:
- Robert A. Fortunati, et al v. Andrew Campagne, et al
- Marie Winfield, Jason Winfield v. Daniel Trottier
- Springfield Hospital v. Robert Hofmann, et al
- Insurance Company of the State et al v. Kerrie A. Johnson, et al
- U.S. v. Stephen Aguilar
- U.S. v. William Murray
- U.S. v. Corey Whitcomb
If you're in Vermont before oral arguments, consider stopping by Rutland's Paramount Theater on Thursday, October 4th at 4:00 p.m. for a special event sponsored by the Second Circuit Committee on History, Commemorative Events and Civic Education.
The Committee is hosting a Hands Lecture, named for first cousins Learned and Augustus Hand, who sat on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals for over 30 years. The Hands Lecture series sponsors addresses by well-known speakers on topics of interest often touching on historical and sociological developments tied directly or indirectly to the judiciary and the bar of the Second Circuit.
Professor Frank Bryan, the John G. McCullough Professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont, will deliver the Oct. 4 lecture, speaking on the topic: "Why Political Systems Change: The Case of Vermont."
The Hands Lecture will be followed by a reception in the lobby of the Paramount Theatre. Both events are free and open to the public.
