Bryan Stow's Attorney Thomas Girardi Has History of Big Verdicts

By Stephanie Rabiner, Esq. on May 25, 2011 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

In an unsurprising move, the family of Bryan Stow--the Giants fan who was severely attacked at the Dodgers' season opener--has filed a lawsuit against the ballpark and the team. And who, exactly, is Bryan Stow's attorney?

Thomas Girardi of the Girardi Keese law firm in Los Angeles.

A member of the California State Bar's Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame and the California Judicial Council, he's known for big verdicts and even bigger settlements.

Thomas Girardi has spent the last fifty years practicing law, with a focus on commercial litigation, products liability, toxic torts, personal injury, and wrongful death, according to his online profile.

During this time, he's managed to obtain more than 30 verdicts and 100 settlements of $1 million or more, including a $45 million settlement with Disney after a 4-year-old was injured on a ride at Disneyland, and a $35 million settlement with a supermarket chain after a light pole fell and struck a young girl on the head.

He also extracted a cool $4.85 billion from Merck over its drug, Vioxx.

If the complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday offers any insight, it's that this case will likely be no different.

The lawsuit gets to the heart of the matter, blaming the lack of security at Dodger Stadium on Frank McCourt's well-publicized "lavish lifestyle" and messy divorce. The lawsuit claims that, to fund that lifestyle, he cut back on security even though he knew that the stadium experiences a significant level of criminal behavior.

Security also remained low on opening day despite the rivalry between the Dodgers and Giants being particularly heated.

With these kinds of allegations, Thomas Girardi's role as Bryan Stow's attorney may be one of his biggest yet.
