Celebrate Veterans Day Like a Lawyer

By William Vogeler, Esq. on November 09, 2018 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

For some, the veteran's story is not a good one.

They come home to find out they can never go home again. Disillusioned, their battles too often end tragically.

Lawyers who help in those struggles can become heroes. Veteran's Day is the day to become one.

Help Veterans

Bob Carlson, president of the American Bar Association, has called upon attorneys everywhere to help veterans on their day.

"As we come together on Veterans Day to honor the sacrifices of our fellow Americans in their military service, we must not forget the many challenges that continue after their separation from active-duty service." he said.

The ABA Veterans Legal Services Initiative established legal clinics at medical centers across the country, he said. It provides provides legal aid resources, including an online tool for veterans facing civil legal issues.

The ABA recently formed the ABA Military and Veterans Legal Center. Carlson said it will create special projects, networks, and other resources for veterans.

Homeless Veterans

According to a recent survey, homeless veterans often have legal problems. It is one of their main challenges.

Those veterans -- living on the streets or shelters -- literally can't go home. Carlson challenged lawyers -- and more than 1.3 million in the United States -- to make a difference in their lives.

"Please visit our Military and Veterans Legal Center at www.abamilvets.org to learn more about what we do and how you can get involved," he said.
