Divorce Mediation Lawyer Sets Sail: New Office is a Yacht

By Stephanie Rabiner, Esq. on June 16, 2011 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

California divorce attorney Dennis Cohen has made perhaps the most enlightened and jealousy-inducing real estate decision ever made by a member of the legal profession:

He decided to move into his very own yacht office.

Docked in the Marina del Rey harbor in West Los Angeles, Cohen's 57-foot yacht, appropriately named Concordance, serves not only as an office for his divorce mediation practice, but also an alternative means of income during these tough times.

That's right--the Daily Breeze reports that he rents out his divorce mediation yacht office on weekends for romantic getaways.

A family law attorney for 30 years, the paper reports that Dennis Cohen decided to become a mediator about 12 years ago after becoming jaded with the costs and ineffectiveness of litigation.

The idea for a yacht office was born about 5 years ago, and he has been renovating ever since.

His rationale?

He told the paper that he conducts sessions in his yacht's comfortable living room, which, along with views of the water, is calming, and a great topic to break the ice between warring parties.

Though you'd probably like your own yacht office, you don't need one to take advantage of its attributes.

Cohen makes a very good point--the environment in which you conduct a mediation or settlement negotiation can have a beneficial impact on the proceedings if done right.

So, take a page from Dennis Cohen and his yacht office and reevaluate your office space. Do you think it helps or hinders your ability to best represent your clients?
