From Campari to Beer, SCOTUS Likes Booze

By George Khoury, Esq. on January 25, 2019 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

In a recently published book, Glass and Gavel: The U.S. Supreme Court and Alcohol, by Nancy Maveety, some of the favorite cocktails of Supreme Court Justices are revealed and discussed, along with notable alcohol-related cases and the social aspect alcohol has had on the Court and Justices.

Apparently, both Maveety and the Notorious RBG are big fans of Campari, and the classic Italian cocktail, the Negroni, as she explains during the Modern Law Library's most recent podcast, featuring an extended segment about the book.

The Lubricant of Justice(s)

As Homer Simpson so eloquently put it, alcohol can also be "the cause of and solution to all of life's problems." But it can also really help when it comes to easing anxieties and tensions during social gatherings.

And for the Justices, who actually do socialize from time to time, alcohol apparently has certainly helped, and might explain just how Justices Ginsburg and Scalia could be such great friends. One of the more notably facts that she discusses, both in the podcast and in the book, is Justice Kennedy's love of wine.

The book takes a look at the popular cocktails that SCOTUS Justices drank throughout recent history. However, sadly, the book was already in production during the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, when the rookie Justice proclaimed his love for beer. As Maveety jokes on the podcast, she decided to have the book published without touching that subject.
