Notorious RBG Is Back in Court for Big Conference
It has been announced that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg actually made it into the Court for the Justices' regular conference Friday morning.
Since her surgery to remove lung cancer tumors in December, she has been working from home and had not shown up to the High Court, not even for January's oral arguments. Notably, she did not miss any votes though and her return couldn't have been timed better, as oral arguments are scheduled to start next week. Unfortunately, there has been no confirmation of whether Justice Ginsburg will take the bench next week.
A Significant Conference
The Justices' conferences today is believed to include consideration of the Trump administration's appeal to add the citizenship question to the 2020 census form.
As reported by the LA Times, the 2020 census appeal is a big issue nationally, and one that is playing out in both the Second Circuit and Ninth Circuit, unless SCOTUS decides to take up the case before the appellate courts have a chance to do so.
Given that this is Justice Ginsburg, it seems that she may have felt compelled to attend the conference in person due to this highly controversial issue. However, with that in mind, it seems likely that if the Notorious RBG can handle that conference, we're likely to see her on the bench next week.
Update: Since publication of this post, the Justices granted cert. in this matter and have added the case to their already busy April docket.
