'RBG' Documentary Gets 'Nightline' Spotlight
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's status as cultural icon has done wonders for inspiring individuals, especially to pursue legal or social justice careers. She's so popular, a month after her documentary released to the public, nightly news programs still want to ride that popularity wave.
The directors of the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary, RBG, recently appeared on the popular nightly news show, Nightline, to talk about the film and the Notorious RBG. The late-night news piece highlighted the fact that the documentary has been a smash box office success, raking in, as of this week, over $10 million. The late-night piece also highlighted several aspects of the Justice's career, personal politics, and personal life.
Ill Advised Comments?
While Nightline produced what could easily be called a "puff-piece," the producers didn't shy away from coloring the story with divisive, partisan language, even going so far as to highlight the fact that Justice Ginsburg spoke out against President Donald Trump while he was on the campaign trail. Those comments were called "ill advised" and "breaking tradition." Though the piece touts RBG as a liberal feminist hero, it's also quick to bandy about criticism.
For the most part, the segment aired some footage of the Justice talking, and from her career, coupled with commentary from the directors/producers. Additionally, the producers noted, Justice Ginsburg has no plans of retirement and has already hired clerks for the next two terms.
RBG, the Superhero
As the producers described Justice Ginsburg's career history, it makes it clear why RBG is viewed as a superhero by so many adoring fans, beyond just her brutal workout routine.
Unlike most of her Ivy League law graduate peers, there were no biglaw jobs for women at the time she entered the legal workforce. She worked hard to get where she is today, literally epitomizing the bygone traditional American dream of hard work and determination leading to success.
