Supreme Children's Book Author: Sotomayor Has 3 New Kids Books

By William Vogeler, Esq. on November 10, 2017 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor usually writes for a sophisticated audience.

Some of her most notable decisions have involved children, such as a custody dispute between parents in New York and Hong Kong. But her newest writings are intended for children to read.

Sotomayor is working on books for young people. One is a picture book that she hopes will show "happy endings are possible" even for struggling families.

"Happy Endings"

The jurist has a crowded publishing schedule, according to her publisher. Penguin Random House is adapting her best-selling memoir "My Beloved World" for middle-schoolers.

She is also collaborating with illustrators on two other books. One, "Turning Pages," is an autobiography.

The other is about "childhood differences." It is due out in 2019, while the other memoirs are schedule for next fall.

Supreme court justices have written hundreds of books, but not many have written children's books. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the only one to have an illustrated work-out book.

Notorious RBG

Ginsburg and Sotomayor are not in competition. They may both have illustrated books, but they have even more in common when it comes to writing.

According to one study, the pair vote together 90 percent of the time. Only Justice Elena Kagan votes more often with Sotomayor -- 94 percent of the time.

Of course, Ginsburg was appointed almost 20 years before Sotomayor and Kagan made it to the bench. They were practically kids then.
