Bad boy boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.'s domestic violence charges have netted him a 90-day jail sentence. Mayweather pled guilty in Las Vegas as part of a plea deal to a count of battery domestic violence against then-girlfriend Josie Harris. He also pled no contest to two harassment charges.
The assault occurred in 2010 after Harris informed Mayweather she was dating another man. Mayweather also threatened his children during the incident.
He could have faced up to 18 months in prison and $3,000 in fines, reports the Seattle Times.
Prosecutors originally charged Mayweather with felonies. They were reduced to misdemeanors as part of the plea deal. If convicted of all his original charges, the champ would have faced up to 34 years in prison.
That's why Mayweather -- and his fans -- are likely breathing a sigh of relief. Promoters were planning to set up a fight between Mayweather and fellow pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, reports the Los Angeles Times. Mayweather's legal woes didn't help, as promoters were unsure if there would be a trial. They were also unsure how long Mayweather's sentence would be if he was convicted.
With the 90-day prison sentence, there's a whole lot less uncertainty.
Mayweather's 3-month jail sentence may seem light, but it was also coupled with a $2,500 fine, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Mayweather was actually sentenced to 6 months in jail. He will only spend 90 days incarcerated because three months of his sentence were suspended. Judge Melissa Saragosa also ordered Mayweather to attend a year-long domestic violence counseling program. Additionally, he must complete 100 hours of community service.
Prosecutors originally argued that Mayweather had a history of domestic violence. And that previous counseling efforts failed.
However, it was ultimately up to the judge to sentence Floyd Mayweather for his domestic violence battery against Josie Harris. It remains to be seen if "Money" will actually fight Pacquiao or not, as the two sides have yet to come to any kind of agreement in principal.
