Jalen Rose's DUI: 20 Days in Jail for Ex-NBA Star

By Cynthia Hsu, Esq. | Last updated on

For ESPN analyst and former NBA star Jalen Rose, a DUI has netted him 20-day jail sentence.

Rose pled guilty to the DUI in May after he was stopped when he veered off a road in West Bloomfield Township in Michigan, reports NPR.

He said he had drunk around six martinis. At the time, his blood-alcohol level was at 0.12%, above Michigan's legal limit. Nobody was injured during the incident, NPR reports.

Rose was actually sentenced to 92 days in custody, but Judge Kimberly Small has suspended the other 70-some days he was to serve, according to NPR. As a result, Rose will be serving 20 days behind bars.

In addition to his jail sentence, Rose will have a year of probation where he will be required to attend an alcohol awareness program and alcohol impact sessions with victims and survivors of drunk driving incidents.

Rose seems to have learned his lesson, if what he has said in court holds. He has accepted full responsibility and blame for endangering the community, according to NPR.

The probation department in that case actually did not even recommend jail time, reports NPR. But, the judge wanted the message to be clear that drunk driving would not be tolerated, according to The Detroit News.

Drunk driving arrests and convictions often do lead to jail time. Other punishments for drunk driving offenses could include suspension of someone's driver's license, probation, or fines. Some states have different penalties for drunk driving. And, there are a variety of factors that can influence a judge's sentencing of a drunk driver, including whether or not an injury occurred as a result of the accident or if their blood-alcohol content was very high.

Maybe Rose's sincerity in accepting the blame for the accident, coupled with the lack of injuries as a result of the DUI led the judge to suspend the rest of the 92-day sentence. Jalen Rose's DUI is the first blemish on his otherwise clean driving record, reports The Detroit News.
