Colorado Federal Court Offers ECF System Training

By Jenny Tsay, Esq. | Last updated on

The U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado is offering in-person and online training for its Electronic Case Files (ECF) system.

Like many other jurisdictions, e-filing your federal court documents is pretty much mandatory in Colorado unless there's an exceptional circumstance, according the district court's website.

The ECF training is open to attorneys and law firm staff members, including paralegals and law clerks.

What's in It for Me?

Living in a digital world means that attorneys should probably digitize their practices as well. You know you've had one of those late nights where you suddenly realize you need a copy of a previous judgment, but the court is closed and you really wished there was some kind of pleading vending machine system.

Well, look no further than the ECF system. Beginning in June 2005 for civil cases and December 2005 for criminal cases, attorneys have been allowed to file documents online for the Colorado District Court. With these documents up on the Internet, attorneys have 24-hour access to file or view documents, according the court's website. Plus, using an e-file system saves lots and lots of trees, because hey, who doesn't love oxygen?

The Colorado District Court's two-hour training session will cover topics like:

  • How to prepare documents for electronic filing;
  • How to retrieve electronically filed documents;
  • How to change your notice options;
  • Troubleshooting tips if you're having difficulties filing; and
  • An overview of ECF procedures, including service, system requirements, and electronic signatures.

The in-person training sessions will be held in Room A142 on the first floor of the Alfred A. Arraj U.S. Courthouse in Denver. At least one in-person training session is being offered each month this year.

But I'm Already Trained in Other Jurisdictions!

For those lifelong gunners who are licensed to practice in multiple jurisdictions and have completed similar courses in other federal courts, they get a pass from the district court as long as the attorney reads and understands the ECF procedures and the user's manual for Colorado.

Attorneys or one of their staff members must register online in order to attend the electronic case files system training.
