Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote today on whether or not former Kansas Attorney General Steve Six's nomination for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals should be forwarded to the full Senate.
On March 9, 2011, President Barack Obama nominated Steve Six to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Six is currently a partner at Stevens & Brand in Lawrence, Kansas.
Who is Steve Six?
As reported by the Alliance for Justice, Born in Lawrence, Kansas, Steve Six received his J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law. After graduating law school, Six clerked for Judge Deanell Tacha of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Subsequently, he joined a law firm for over ten years and was appointed to the state district court bench in 2005 by then-Governor, Kathleen Sebelius. In 2008, Sebelius appointed him Kansas Attorney General.
There has, however, been opposition to the nomination of Six. Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas said that he will vote against Six’s nomination, reports the Wichita Eagle.
Furthermore, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts has also stepped up to say that he will not support the nomination. In a statement earlier today, as reported by Legal News Online, Roberts had this to say:
“After thoroughly reviewing Mr. Six’s record and his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will not support his nomination to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. I have urged my colleagues on the committee to vote against his nomination.”
Much of Six’s opposition comes from pro-life abortion groups and conservative organizations, including Kansans for Life, the National Right to Life Committee, and Operation Rescue.
Six lost his seat as Kansas Attorney General last November in the general election. The current Kansas Attorney General is Derek Schmidt, a Republican.
The Senate Judiciary Committee vote is scheduled for Friday, June 17.
