Phoenix Courthouses

Last updated: June 26, 2023

Phoenix is a sprawling metropolis of almost 1.5 million people, the sixth most populous city in the U.S. and the largest capital city by population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Serving this vast city is a state court system with three levels. At the lowest, the justice courts and municipal courts handle things like landlord/tenant disputes, traffic violations, contract issues, car accidents and minor crimes. At the next level, the Superior Court of Arizona for Maricopa County handles all kinds of cases, including complex lawsuits and more serious criminal cases.

At the highest level, the state appellate courts hear cases that have already been decided by one of the lower courts and have been successfully appealed. The highest court of Arizona, the Supreme Court, is located in downtown Phoenix. Phoenix also has a handful of federal courts dealing with matters such as immigration and bankruptcy cases. The following is a guide to Phoenix state and federal courthouses.
