Free Legal Aid in San Jose

San Jose is the heart of Silicon Valley, known for its booming tech industry and high cost of living. With all that money spent on housing, it's tough to find much left over to pay for a private attorney should the need arise. Fortunately, there are several legal aid organizations in San Jose and nearby that offer free or low cost legal services in many areas of law. Check out the list below to see if one of these organizations can help you with your legal needs.

  • Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal)

    BayLegal has offices all over the Bay Area, including an office serving Santa Clara County. The legal aid organization offers services in several practice areas, including housing law, immigration, domestic violence, consumer issues, public benefits, and youth justice.   • Law Foundation of Silicon Valley

    The Law Foundation has five advocacy programs that each serve low-income clients in the Bay Area in different legal areas. The Health Legal Services (HLS) program offers services to people with health problems, including HIV/AIDS. The Fair Housing Law Project represents victims of housing discrimination and predatory lending. The Public Interest Law Firm has a broad range of practice areas but focuses on senior, youth, and disabled clients. The Foundation's child advocacy program is Legal Advocates for Children and Youth (LACY). Last but not least, the Mental Health Advocacy Project provides specialized services for clients with mental health and developmental disabilities.

    The Legal Aid Society (LAS) is a non-profit law firm founded in 1960 to serve the legal needs of low-income residents of Santa Clara County. LAS has four practice areas: family law, immigration and naturalization, fair housing and landlord/tenant right.

  • Senior Adults Legal Assistance (SALA)

    SALA provides legal services to senior adults in the following areas: public benefits, long term care, elder abuse, housing, consumer issues, incapacity planning, probate and wills. There is no income eligibility requirement to use SALA’s services, but clients must be Santa Clara County residents who are age 60 or older.

  • Project Sentinel (San Jose Fair Housing Consortium)

    Project Sentinel is a housing counseling agency committed to resolving housing issues for low-income individuals and people enrolled in subsidized housing programs. It provides counseling and legal services in several issue areas, including landlord/tenant issues, mortgage issues, fair housing issues, and home ownership issues.   • Katherine & George Alexander Community Law Center (KGACLC)

    KGACLC partners with Santa Clara University Law School and other legal organizations in Santa Clara County to provide legal advice and representation to low-income clients in the areas of employment, immigration, consumer and tax law.   • Next Door’s Legal Advocacy for Victims of Domestic Violence

    Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence provides social, community and legal services for victims of domestic violence and their families. The legal advocacy program offers help with protection orders against abusers and visa petitions for immigrant victims of domestic violence when eligible. They also have a 24-hour Crisis Hotline at (408) 279-2962.
