    Land of Lincoln provides free legal help to low-income people in 65 counties in central and southern Illinois. They can help with most general civil matters, including housing issues such as evictions and foreclosures, family issues like divorce and custody, domestic violence aid like restraining orders, consumer protection, public benefits and health law, Elder and Disability law and education law. If you don’t know which legal aid society to contact first, Land of Lincoln is an excellent choice.

  • Champaign County Legal Self-Help Center

    The Self-Help Center is operated by the county court system. It is not a legal aid society because they will not offer legal advice. Instead, they offer legal information to customers on such topics as instructions for available forms, answers to general legal questions and information on court procedures. This is an excellent, reliably resource for individuals who wish to represent themselves through the legal process.

    The Civil Litigation Clinic is run by law students but supervised by licensed attorneys and professors. They represent low-income individuals and families who do not have resources to hire an attorney. The cases they accept include family law matters such as divorce, child custody, and order of protection proceedings, debtor cases and general civil litigation.

    The Immigration Project is a nonprofit corporation that can help you with most immigration matters for a small fee. They provide free 45-minute initial consultations, and charge $10 for most cases where lawful permanent residents apply for citizenship. Although their primary office is located in Bloomington, they schedule a free consultation clinic once every three months in Champaign.

    The Center for Women in Transition offers both emergency shelter and a transitional housing program to single women and women with children experiencing domestic violence. They support survivors with domestic violence counseling, legal advocacy, parenting support, life skills and financial counseling.
