Louisiana Asbestos Regulations
Hurricane Katrina devastated the region encompassing Louisiana. Not only were numerous buildings and homes completely obliterated, many people lost their lives and those of their family members and beloved pets. But one thing you may not have heard much about is the increased asbestos exposure related to the storm. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina triggered a release of this toxic, fibrous mineral into the atmosphere and cleanup areas. Like the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, first responders only now understand the extreme medical conditions associated with exposure to asbestos.
But natural disasters aren’t the only place residents have had exposure to asbestos. Being on the Gulf Coast, Louisiana is home to a number of oil refineries. Those working in the refineries may have had exposure due to the fire-resistant protective clothing workers tend to wear that contain asbestos. That is one of only a number of ways residents may have been exposed.
