New Jersey Superior Court (Civil Division)

Civil Part: This court handles civil cases involving parties seeking money damages. Examples of cases that are filed here include auto negligence cases, medical malpractice cases, discrimination cases, products liability cases, as well as a variety of other suits in which money damages are sought. 

Special Civil Part: This court handles landlord tenant matters, civil claims for money damages between $3,001- $15,000 including contract cases, motor vehicle accident cases, damage or loss of property cases, non-payment for work performed, and small claims (up to $3,000).

New Jersey Superior Court, Veterans Courthouse (Criminal Division)

Note: This courthouse handles most criminal matters.

Robert N. Wilentz Justice Complex (General Equity and Probate Division)

Note: The Chancery Division-General Equity courts hear cases that seek “equitable relief,” rather than money compensation. The Probate courts hear cases involving issues such as the following: wills, distribution of estates, guardianship proceedings, and more.

Newark Municipal Court (Municipal Division)

Note: The Municipal court handles the following violations: motor vehicle, disorderly person complaints, ordinance, driving while intoxicated (DWI), parking, fish and game violations, and weights and measures. Only the Child Support Enforcement Division is located here. The main Probation office pertaining to persons placed on probation, both adults and juveniles is located at 60 Evergreen Place, East Orange, New Jersey (973) 395-3020.

Tax Court of New Jersey

Parking: Garages are located within one block of the courthouse for a fee. However, you are strongly advised to take public transportation. Contact NJ TRANSIT at (973) 275-5555.

Note: This court hears appeals of tax decisions made by County Boards of Taxation. They also hear appeals on decisions made by the Director of the Division of Taxation on such matters as state income, sales and business taxes, and homestead rebates.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of New Jersey
