Free Legal Aid in El Paso

Last updated: December 6, 2013

You’ve got a solid case but lack the bank account to pay a lawyer for his or her services. Representing yourself against that slick corporate lawyer is out of the question.

Get the best of both worlds by enlisting the assistance of a reputable legal aid group in the El Paso area. Most legal aid societies accept anyone earning less than 125% of the federal poverty guideline, but many accept individuals who are particularly vulnerable, such as immigrants, the disabled, or victims of domestic violence.

General Civil Law

  • Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid

    1331 Texas Ave
    El Paso,
    TX 79901

    Tel: (915) 585-5100

This huge collection of legal aid offices provides general legal services for 68 Southwest Texas counties. They can help you with nearly any issue, but have specialized programs for migrant farm workers. Rio Grande is fairly unique among legal aid groups because they also provide criminal defense services. If you are unsure which legal aid group to contact first, Rio Grande is your safest bet.

  • Paso Del Norte Civil Rights Project

    1317 Rio Grande
    El Paso,
    TX 79902

    Tel: (915) 532-3799

Paso Del Norte provides representation for victims of civil rights abuses, either by government agencies or corporations (including Prisoner’s Rights). They also serve victims of domestic violence and other crimes on immigration issues through the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Program. Their Economic Justice Program helps employees recover wages from employers who don’t pay them or violate their rights.

  • El Paso County Dispute Resolution Center

    8037 Lockheed
    Suite 100

    El Paso,
    TX 79925

    Tel: (915) 533-0998

The Dispute Resolution Center is not technically a legal aid group, but they can help you resolve lawsuits before they begin to save everyone involved time and money. They provide mediation services for all civil cases, child visitation, landlord-tenant issues and community disputes for a nominal fee (usually $20).

Immigration Law

  • Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center

    1500 E. Yandell Dr.
    El Paso,
    TX 79902

    Tel: (915) 544-5126

Law Americas advises and represents low income immigrants. They emphasize giving aid to Mexican immigrants, especially those who have been the victims or violent crimes such as domestic abuse.

  • Diocesan Migrant and Refugee Services, Inc.

    2400 East Yandell St.
    El Paso,
    TX 79903

    Tel: (915) 532-3975

This immigration clinic can also provide either brief advice or full representation for individuals meeting their income guidelines.

Domestic Violence

  • Center Against Family Violence

    580 Giles Rd.
    El Paso,
    TX 79915

    Tel: (915) 595-2238

  • El Paso County Domestic Relations Office

    TX 79915

    Tel: (915) 834-8200

The Domestic Relations Office is a branch of the El Paso County government. They help families comply with protective orders and court-ordered child support, and can enforce these court orders should the parties fail to comply.
