Businesses are regulated through a combination of federal, state, and local laws. For instance, states sometimes implement a higher minimum wage than the national standard or offer more protections for employees. Business laws may include restrictions on deceptive business practices; securities fraud; environmental regulations, such as air and water cleanliness standards; insurance and liability; and contracts. Texas employment discrimination law, for instance, protects workers who were the target of discrimination for participating in an emergency evacuation.
