Even in the French Quarter of New Orleans, known for its drive-through cocktail vendors, it is highly illegal to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. In fact, Louisiana DWI (driving while intoxicated) law imposes a jail sentence for most offenders, although jail time may be waived by the terms of probation. For example, a first offender of Louisiana DWI law faces the prospect of 10 days to six months in jail, which is reduced to 48 hours if the offender completes at least 32 hours of community service, enters a court-ordered substance abuse program, and also completes a driver education course. In addition, first offenders have their license suspended for at least 90 days. After a third offense, the offender may have his or her car impounded and sold at auction.
