Steven Seagal Sexual Harassment Lawsuit on Hold

By Kamika Dunlap on April 29, 2010 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

The sexual harassment lawsuit against action film star Steven Seagal is not moving forward just yet. His attorney, Marty Singer, has filed a motion to compel arbitration, which means the next hearing in the matter has been postponed until May 27, according to E! Online.

Although Kayden Nguyen is suing her former employer Steven Seagal for sexual harassment and human trafficking, Singer claims that under her employment contract, any claims must be settled through an arbitrator and not in court.

In general, arbitration is a well-established and widely used means to end disputes. It is one of several kinds of alternative dispute resolution, which provide parties to a controversy with a choice other than litigation.

Unlike litigation, arbitration takes place out of court. The two sides select an impartial third party, known as an arbitrator, agree in advance to comply with the arbitrator's award and then participate in a hearing at which both sides can present evidence and testimony.

The arbitrator's decision is usually final, and courts rarely reexamine it.

As previously discussed, Nguyen, 23, is a former model was hired earlier this year to work as an executive assistant at Seagal's production company. While on the job, Nguyen claims she learned that she actually was signed up to be on staff as sexual servant, according to court documents.

The lawsuit alleges that Nguyen sexually assaulted by the 58-year-old actor with forced contact or groping. In addition, the complaint says Nguyen had to flee his house, leaving hundreds of dollars worth of personal property behind.
