The 3 Best TV Judges

By George Khoury, Esq. | Last updated on

When it comes to TV judges, it seems like everyone has an opinion. And while normally lawyers don't like to hand out our opinions for free, when it comes to who the best judge on TV is (or was), most will be quick to explain that they're all hacks.

However, these days, who isn't some sort of hack at something, and "reality" court television shows that pit untrained individuals against each other before a questionably trained "judge" can be pretty darn funny.

Below you can read a little bit about three of the best TV judges out there.

Judge Judy

Yes, she gets it wrong all the time, but you're not watching for that reason. The Judy-isms, as they're called, are just fantastic. And when measuring best TV judges, like any TV personality, money talks and Judge Judy makes more money than most other TV personalities, period.

While you might want to hate on Judy, it's worth noting that she's way more reasonable off-the-bench than you might expect. But sadly, due to her high-profile, apparently 10% of college grads believe she's on the Supreme Court (caveat -- it was a CNN online poll, so take those results with a whole salt mine).

Judge Mathis

When it comes to life stories, Judge Greg Mathis has one worth reading about. He overcame adversity, and after being a gang member and in and out jail as a youth, he was able to turn it all around. After his mother died, Mathis worked at a McDonalds, put himself through undergraduate and law school, and then was denied admission to the bar because of his criminal record. Eventually, after three years of appeals, he was admitted, and very soon after elected as an actual judge. And when it comes to judging, he does a pretty darn good job explaining things.

Judge Marilyn Milian

The People's Court is perhaps the most widely known reality-court TV show ever. And Judge Marilyn Milian is probably the most pedigreed and experienced TV court judge on the fake bench. She's so good, her YouTube channel actually has helpful videos that you might consider sending to your clients.
