These Programs Help Connect Attorneys to Volunteer Opportunities
Even though this blog is called Greedy Associates, we know that many of our readers are dedicated to giving back to their community. Attorneys who volunteer help people facing some of life’s toughest challenges. Plus, volunteering can provide both social and health benefits for those who do it, including lower stress levels and increased emotional stability.
In honor of the International Day of Charity (September 5), we’ve rounded up a few of the programs that connect attorneys with people who need their help.
Disaster Legal Aid
Individuals and businesses impacted by natural disasters often need legal help. The National Disaster Legal Aid Advocacy Center helps connect those affected to attorneys who can help with landlord-tenant issues, insurance claims, FEMA assistance, foreclosures, disaster tax relief, and more.
The Military Pro Bono Project
Unlike many legal programs aimed at veterans, the Military Pro Bono Project focuses on helping service members on active duty. Military personnel facing civil legal issues can get help from volunteer attorneys, even if the service member is currently overseas.
Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide
For those looking to volunteer their services in support of environmental causes, Environmental Law Alliaence Worldwide helps communities protect their natural resources and advocate for change.
The American Bar Association’s Immigrant Child Advocacy Network
Since children in immigration proceedings have no right to appointed counsel, they are often unsuccessful in asserting their legal rights. The ABA’s Immigrant Child Advocacy Network addresses the critical need for pro bono representation for children facing removal proceedings.
Local Opportunities
For volunteer opportunities specific to your state, check out the ABA’s National Pro Bono Opportunities Guide. Local associations and bar groups also often provide information regarding volunteering and pro bono work.
