Top 10 Lawyer Beach Reads for the Unofficial Start to Summer
Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and as the unofficial start to summer, that means one thing -- getting ready for the beach. And while we lawyers spend a great deal of time reading at work, many of us like to read when we're "off duty" as well.
So as you squish your toes in the sand, and lean back in your lounge chair with a pina colada in one hand, here are our top ten summer books that you should be holding in your other hand.
1. Lean In for Graduates by Sheryl Sandberg
An update on the infamous Lean In, the edition for graduates is updated to include topics relevant to today's new graduates including advice for finding a first job, resume and interview tips, and even a chapter for young men.
2. No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State by Glenn Greenwald
Glenn Greenwald, a/k/a the man who met Snowden in Hong Kong, tells his story about meeting Edward Snowden and the aftermath of that meeting.
Arianna Huffington thinks we should all sleep more, debunking the saying "you snooze, you lose."
4. Hard Choices by Hilary Rodham Clinton
Another book from the lawyer-turned-First Lady-turned-Senator-turned-Presidential hopeful-turned Secretary of State, and a bid to add another hyphen to a long list of titles ... -turned-First Woman U.S. President.
5. A Fighting Chance by Elizabeth Warren
Law professor, Senator, and woman behind the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau tells her story.
6. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
A critical look at race in our criminal justice system.
7. Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
We lost a great author earlier this year, and there's no better way to remember him than to (re)read one (or two, or three) of his great novels.
8. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. 'Nuff said.
9. I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai
The story of an incredible teenager fighting for her right to an education.
Did you think I could create a reading list without a Game of Thrones reference? Did you? I haven't tackled this yet, but if you want to know what happens before it does in the show, read this.
Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend and summer!
