UVA Law Student Broke Into Registrar to Steal Transcript Paper

By Cynthia Hsu, Esq. | Last updated on

A UVA law student broke into the University Registrar's Office to steal official transcript paper. The student, Joshua Peter Gomes, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering and another count of possession of burglary tools.

Some might wonder why Gomes would risk it all by breaking into the office. If you're one of those people, you must not be an attorney or a law student.

In this economy, OCI can be incredibly difficult. Landing a BigLaw job, or any law job for that matter, really boils down to two things: your tenacity and skill.

If only.

What getting a job really boils down to is your ability to Bluebook your way onto law review and your grades. Besides that, when you go into interviews all you really need to do is mumble your way through an interview. Just show the interviewing partner that you have a pulse and you can talk coherently.

Of course, news reports have not indicated whether or not Gomes was seeking to bolster his job prospects by stealing the transcript paper. It's possible that he was going to use the official transcript paper to assist others with their job search.

Think about all those gunners that would pay fortunes to have their transcript reflect a perfect 4.0. There are also those undergraduate students who don't have a clue how to study for college finals.

Ultimately, Gomes' antics may end up costing him the chance to become a member of the legal profession. It's all-too-possible that the UVA law student's attempt to break in and steal paper won't make his bar application too palatable.
