Vegas Lawyer Caught on Video in Jailhouse Sex Act with Client
Las Vegas lawyer Curtis Cannon may have thought he'd hit the jackpot in an alleged jailhouse sex act with his client. But the consequences may be hard to swallow.
Police arrested Cannon, 58, on suspicion of voluntary sexual conduct with a prisoner, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports. His client, Crystal Wallis, 23, was also charged.
A hidden camera in a jailhouse interview room allegedly caught Wallis performing oral sex on Cannon last Friday, police allege.
But is that kind of surveillance even allowed in a private meeting that's supposed to be protected by attorney-client privilege?
That's something a defense lawyer may try to take issue with as Curtis Cannon's jailhouse sex case proceeds.
But police seem to have covered their bases. The hidden camera did not capture any audio, thereby avoiding any attorney-client privilege problems, sources told the Review-Journal.
Besides, Cannon's 26-minute meeting with his young client apparently didn't include much talking. It did, however, include Cannon giving Wallis a "high five," Las Vegas' KTNV-TV reports.
Police say they installed the hidden camera as part of an investigation into Cannon's alleged misconduct with jail inmates, the Associated Press reports. It's not clear how many other inmates may have been involved with Cannon.
It's also not clear why Cannon didn't just high-tail it to one of Nevada's many legal houses of prostitution if he needed gratification that badly, Above the Law's Stacy Zaretsky points out. (She also notes Curtis Cannon "would make a great porn name.")
In allegedly admitting to the jailhouse sex act, Curtis Cannon told police he hadn't had sex with his wife in 14 years. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison; he could also face discipline, as Nevada's ethics rules prohibit sex with a client unless there was a pre-existing sexual relationship.
