State Marijuana Laws: Legal to Grow Marijuana Now?

It's a refrain likely heard around the country these days: "Is it legal to grow marijuna?" Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have passed marijuana laws that allow certain individuals to legally use marijuana for medical purposes, reports ProCon.org.
Recreational marijuana use is still banned in every state, but these state marijuana laws may allow both the use and cultivation of cannabis for medical reasons. Keep in mind these laws are very state-specific, so you will definitely want to consult an attorney or doctor before lighting up a joint or installing grow lights into your basement.
Here is a brief overview of the state marijuana laws as provided by ProCon.org:
- Alaska. Law passed in 1998 and individuals are allowed to posses 1 ounce of marijuana or have 6 plants (3 mature, 3 immature).
- Arizona. Law passed in 2010 and individuals are allowed to posses 2.5 ounces of marijuana and possibly up to 12 plants.
- California. Law passed in 1996 and individuals are allowed to posses 8 ounces of marijuana and 6 mature or 12 immature plants.
- Colorado. Law passed in 2000 and individuals are allowed to posses 2 ounces of marijuana and 6 plants (3 mature, 3 immature).
- Connecticut. Law passed in 2012 and individuals are allowed to possess a one month supply of marijuana.
- District of Columbia. Law passed in 2010 and individuals are allowed to posses 2 ounces of dried marijuana.
- Delaware. Law passed in 2011 and individuals are allowed to posses 6 ounces of marijuana.
- Hawaii. Law passed in 2000 and individuals are allowed to posses 3 ounces of marijuana and 7 plants (3 mature, 4 immature).
- Maine. Law passed in 1999 and individuals are allowed to posses 2.5 ounces of marijuana and 6 plants.
- Michigan. Law passed in 2008 and individuals are allowed to posses 2.5 ounces of marijuana and 12 plants.
- Montana. Law passed in 2004 and individuals are allowed to posses 1 ounce of marijuana and 4 plants mature and 12 seedlings.
- Nevada. Law passed in 2000 and individuals are allowed to posses 1 ounces of marijuana and 7 plants (3 mature, 4 immature).
- New Jersey. Law passed in 2010 and individuals are allowed to posses 2 ounces of marijuana.
- New Mexico. Law passed in 2007 and individuals are allowed to posses 6 ounces of marijuana and 16 plants (4 mature, 12 immature).
- Oregon. Law passed in 1998 and individuals are allowed to posses 24 ounces of marijuana and 24 plants (6 mature, 18 immature).
- Rhode Island. Law passed in 2006 and individuals are allowed to posses 2.5 ounces of marijuana and 12 plants.
- Vermont. Law passed in 2004 and individuals are allowed to posses 2 ounces of marijuana and 9 plants (2 mature, 7 immature).
- Washington. Law passed in 1998 and individuals are allowed to posses 24 ounces of marijuana and 15 plants.

So what is the takeaway from these state marijuana laws? One, if you smoke, you may want to consider moving to Oregon. Two, we cannot reiterate enough that you should consult with an attorney or doctor before taking medicinal marijuana.
