5 Crazy Storage Unit Crimes
Renting a storage unit is usually a run-of-the-mill experience. You rent a space, you buy a lock, you put stuff in the space, you put your lock on the door, then return once a year to add more stuff until you need to upgrade to a larger or second space. Occasionally though, you hear about crazy crimes or just really weird occurrences that happen at self-storage locations, and you feel thankful that you've never had that experience.
The following 5 crazy storage unit crimes might make you think twice about renting a self-storage unit at a location that doesn't provide some level of security.
1. Beware the Bat Man
If you have a storage unit in New Mexico, you may want to make sure you stash a hatchet and hammer in your storage unit in order to fight off the bat man. When a storage unit owner in New Mexico was just trying to get some of his stuff, he was attacked by a bat wielding man who claimed the owner had insulted his wife by making a rude gesture. Thankfully, the bat man is now facing charges.
2. Dead Cats Still Smell Bad When Frozen
If you're a fan of storage locker auctions, then you probably know that it is a buyer beware market filled with unwanted surprises. Sometimes you get bags of old clothes, sometimes you get bags of garbage, and sometimes you wind up with 40 frozen dead cats and a stench of death that permeates the clothing you're wearing. Just think, all that cat for the low low price of $150. For you animal lovers out there, know that the NYPD is investigating and if they find foul play with the dead cats, they will likely look to bring charges.
3. Goodbye Games, Goodbye Youth
In a heartbreaking story out of Tacoma, Washington, a young man's life's work was stolen from him when his $65,000 video game collection was stolen from his storage unit. He had an original Atari system, as well as countless classic games still in the original flimsy plastic wrap.
4. Rob'em All
A pair of burglars apprehended up in Bellevue, Washington, are suspected to be the burglars involved in a rash of self-storage robberies. Authorities suspect that the pair robbed homes by day and storage units by night, and had operated in Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, and Renton. Law enforcement suspects the pair would hit as many as 20 different units per night and are still trying to contact all the various victims involved.
5. Don't Loan Terrorists Money for Storage Units
A Topeka, Kansas man was sentenced to 15 months after providing a prospective terrorist with a $100 loan that was used to rent a storage unit. The prospective terrorist was making a suicide bomb and the Topeka man was aware of it, and still loaned him the money for the storage unit.
The big take away from all of this: Make sure your storage facility has security cameras!
