Needles Found in Sandwiches on 4 Delta Flights
A man who bit into a sandwich with a needle inside of it has been put on anti-HIV medication.
The man was on a Delta flight from Amsterdam to Minneapolis-St. Paul when he took a couple bites from his sandwich. On his second bite, the needle punctured the top of the man's mouth.
Investigators are looking into the incident and it's unclear if the needles were tainted with anything. The man was put on the anti-HIV medication as a precautionary measure.
Authorities found three one-inch long sewing needles inside sandwiches on this particular Delta flight from Amsterdam. Another man also bit into a sandwich with a needle inside of it, but the needle did not appear to have punctured his skin, reports Yahoo! When investigators looked at the remaining sandwiches, they found a third needle.
In total, six needles have been found inside sandwiches on four separate Delta flights, reports Yahoo!
Coincidentally, another alleged victim is the son of the man put onto the anti-HIV medication. The son was traveling on a different flight and did not turn over the needle to authorities as he is planning to bring a lawsuit. It's probably a safe bet the father will soon follow.
As an airline that carries passengers for profit, Delta is considered a common carrier and bears a duty to keep its passengers safe. This can include measures like maintaining their planes and training their pilots. And if food is served, the airline has a duty to make sure that its food is safe to eat.
When six needles end up in the sandwiches that Delta serves, the airline may have some explaining (or lawsuit settling) to do. It will be interesting to learn what steps the airline took to maintain food safety, and what additional steps the airline will take in the future.
