Settlement Offer in Learjet Crash Approved By Judge

By Minara El-Rahman | Last updated on

The settlement offer from Learjet Inc., Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and other companies involved in a Learjet crash that involved Travis Barker, the late DJ AM, and their entourage back in 2008 in South Carolina, has been approved by Judge Mary Strobel in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

We had written about this Learjet crash earlier in FindLaw's Common Law Blog. It occurred on Sept. 20, 2008 in South Carolina. The Learjet crash was so severe, that it killed four people and injured Travis Barker and the late DJ AM. The four people killed in the crash were the two pilots and Mr. Barker's assistant and Mr. Barker's bodyguard.

As reported Associated Press reports, this particular settlement is intended for the wife and son of Mr. Barker's assistant, Mr. Chris Baker. The settlement offer includes funds for Mr. Baker's son, who is now three years old. Mr. Baker's son will also receive an annuity that will pay out more than $17 million dollars over the boy's lifetime. Ms. Otilia Baker, who is Mr. Baker's widow, will receive more than $7.6 million dollars. The settlement needed to be approved by the judge because it involved a minor.

Judge Strobel stated that the settlement offer was in the best interest of the child. Learjet Inc., and the other companies involved in the lawsuit had already settled with Travis Barker and with the mother of Mr. Barker's bodyguard for an undisclosed amount back in December 2009.

Ms. Otilia Baker's attorney, Mr. Brian Panish told reporters: "It's a very sad case, but we're glad they were able to avoid a trial and receive full compensation."
