Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
The Seventh Circuit is a delight to cover -- how could it not be when you have the likes of Posner and Easterbrook writing opinions? And with such high-profile judges on the bench, the Seventh Circuit is in the news sometimes as much for its personalities as it is for the law coming out of the jurisdiction.
As we take this time to get prepped for what 2014 has to offer, here's a look back at 2013 to see the legal highlights from the Seventh Circuit:
Seventh Circuit in the News
Not sure if it's something in the water, but many high-profile employment cases come out of the Seventh Circuit. Not only that but we saw (and will continue watching) as the Blagojevich appeal makes its way through court, the Veluchamy family lose their priority claim for close to $30 million, and the court choose a side in the Obamacare contraception mandate circuit split.
Cases Headed to SCOTUS
Some of the cases originating from the Seventh Circuit, and before the Supreme Court this term, are Madigan v Levin and Harris v. Quinn.
In Madigan v. Levin, the Court had to determine whether government employees could bring age discrimination claims under acts other than the ADEA. It dismissed the case as improvidently granted just weeks after oral arguments.
In Harris, the Court will determine the fate of unions' ability to collect and use fair share fees. Oral arguments are scheduled for January 21, 2014.
The Honorable Richard A. Posner -- jurist, author, and professor -- gets a category of his own. While we love a Posner benchslap just as much as anyone, the big news with Judge Posner this year was his apparent admission that Crawford was wrongly decided, and then his (probably even more publicized) backpedalling on the statement.
The Seventh Circuit, at the very heart of our country, promises to bring you even more newsworthy jurisprudence in 2014, and we'll be here to tell you all about it.
