Gadgets to Purchase When Starting a Law Firm

By George Khoury, Esq. | Last updated on

Are you planning on starting your own practice in the new year? If so, you might be looking to outfit your office during the holidays when prices on some good-enough-for-legal-work consumer-grade tech might be at an all-time low price.

Below, you can read about some of the best tech essentials to be picking up before you open your new law office's doors.

Tis the Season to Buy Office Gear

Perhaps the most essential piece of equipment for a lawyer these days is a good office computer and/or laptop that can connect to larger external monitors or dual large external monitors. However, smart phones might soon take the top spot for most important tech gadget for lawyers, but for now, computers still reign supreme, so get the big monitors and thank me later.

The list of tech and computer accessories can get pretty exhausting, but apart from a good laptop and big monitors on your desk that the laptop can connect to, you definitely want to get the following accessories:

  • Large capacity external hard drive
  • Wireless mouse and full keyboard (your hands will thank me)
  • Printer with automatic multi-page document scanning/copying capabilities
  • Laptop privacy screen (if you plan to work outside an office or private space)
  • High quality surge protector

In addition to these musts, depending on your work ethic, you may want to invest in a really nice desk chair, or maybe even a standing desk, or a standing desk attachment, so that you can take breaks from sitting down for hours at a time while staring into those massive double monitors (Protip: you can stack a few old law school books up on your desk to make a really bad version of a standing desk, but at least you'd be putting those books to actual use).

Lawyer on the Go?

If you're planning on being a mobile attorney that practices out of a virtual office, then you'll likely want to have a newer smartphone that can run the case management software that you plan to use, as well as function for all the other amazing business purposes smartphones can be used for these days.

And if you're going to be using a smartphone on the go, then you probably want to make sure you pick up one of those mobile-device chargers so that you don't run out of power when you need it most.
