High Profile Hail Mary Good for Business

By George Khoury, Esq. on January 28, 2019 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

The recent pass interference no-call in the Saints - Rams NFC championship game has been causing quite the stir on social and traditional media. People are up in arms, as when it comes to bad officiating, this missed call may perhaps go down in history as one of the worst in football history.

Saints fans, notably, are the most upset as the missed call is blamed for the team not making it to the Super Bowl. And with such an obvious missed call, a couple lawyers decided to file class actions challenging the lack of action by the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell. And though these cases have zero to no chance of success, as one Forbes commentator explained, the lawyers and law firms certainly got a boost to the number of incoming calls.

Firm Goes to Social to Stop the Calls

As one of the law firms quickly learned after filing the suit, fans were shockingly willing to just call up the law firm to give them a piece of their mind. Fortunately, overwhelmingly, people called to express support. But, the firm took to Facebook to tell their followers and fans to stop calling about the blown call case.

And if you're wondering about the status of the case, currently, a petition for removal to federal court is being considered. And notably, the first federal judge assigned to the matter had to recuse himself as he is a Saints season ticket holder.

Know Your Capacity for Fame

If you've never had your name go viral, or get published in the paper alongside some authoritative commentary or good case result, you might want to reach out to a colleague who has had that experience.

It might not be a 100% sure fire bet, but usually, during the day or two or week, after being published or going viral, your phone line and email inbox will be flooded. If you're not prepared to handle that flood (for example, by having a phone service like Ruby on standby), you could be in for a serious headache as you sort through the fan mail, requests for free help, requests for help by the delusional, and, of course, with matters you have no interest in.
