It's not too early to think about seasons greetings, and for some things it's probably too late.
So let's just talk about what you can do this season -- especially if you're on a budget. Assuming you're not a Grinch, let's say you can spend a couple hundred bucks to cheer up your clients.
Come on. If you're charging a couple hundred bucks an hour, you can do this.
It's so traditional to send greeting cards, you better just do it. But don't send e-cards, unless you like the idea of being deleted with a mouse-click.
If you are taking the time to create a group email, save the e-blasts for newsletters. Clients and colleagues are more likely to look at them for more than a few seconds.
Somewhere in yesteryear, people used to visit their neighbors. You know, bring them a figgy pudding.
Unless you sing better than Tevye, however, leave the caroling to the semi-professionals. It's not your voice, but what you say. Christmas is not for everybody, remember.
If you are not a solo practitioner, this is where it gets tricky. With ten co-workers or so, the math is simple.
But if your firm is larger, you'll probably have to exercise some discretion if not discrimination -- nothing illegal, but not exactly equal. A good trick is to gift what your clients sell; it's like feeding two birds with one stone, or something.
If you stretch that budget a little, nothing says "the holidays" like a party. Shorten your invite list and forget the liquor, and you can spend more on food. Plus, you can help lawyers escape their worst addiction.
Finally, go to some parties. For marketing purposes, client parties should be a priority. Take some seasonal business cards and you might have a bigger budget next year!
