Is Your Office Ready for the Next Swine Flu?

By Kevin Fayle on May 07, 2009 | Last updated on March 21, 2019
So it looks like the swine flu is on the wane.  So far, swine flu hasn't turned out to be as virulent as people feared, and the precautions people took in response to early reports of the disease's spread have helped to prevent the outbreak from turning into a pandemic.

But experts urge that there is still a chance that the organism could evolve into a more virulent strain.  The Southern Hemisphere is just beginning its flu season, and epidemiologists are eying the spread of the disease there with great concern.
If swine flu does reemerge, will you be prepared for it?  What about the next virus that rises up and threatens to turn into a pandemic?  How can you protect your employees and your business from the devastating effects of such a disease?

The Colorado Bar has published a helpful article entitled "Pandemic Preparations for the Workplace" in the latest issue of its Colorado Lawyer magazine.  The article discusses state and federal laws and regulations concerning safe workplace environments, and lists statutes that may come into play when dealing with the issues created by a pandemic.

The authors conclude that organizations should create policies that address the idiosyncrasies of a global disease outbreak, noting that employers might have to offer their employees more flexibility during these situations than required under state or federal law.  This flexibility can help keep you and your employees healthy, and keep your firm running smoothly during a pandemic.

Read the article, decide what precautions to take and remember: a little hand sanitizer never hurt anyone!
