Pornstars Need Lawyers, Too, but for What?

By William Vogeler, Esq. | Last updated on

Stormy Daniels isn't the only pornstar with a lawyer.

She may be the most famous pornstar in the legal headlines right now, but there are many lawyers handling cases for adult entertainers everyday. Michael Avenatti is just one solo in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, even large law firms are filing lawsuits -- thousands of them -- for people in porn. So, why?

Do This Law

With all the attention on the pornstar and the president, it's easy to forget that the biggest porn cases -- on the civil side -- have involved copyright and privacy. Remember Pamela Anderson, Hulk Hogan, and Kim Kardashian?

BigLaw firm Fox Rothschild is doing copyright enforcement for Strike 3 Holdings, a porn production company. Above the Law has been keeping track.

It says Strike 3 has filed 1,653 copyright cases this year, using the BigLaw firm and smaller firms as counsel. The ezine calls the amount of work on behalf of the porn studio "staggering."

In one case, a federal judge reportedly asked Fox Rothschild lawyers why they shouldn't be sanctioned for their Strike 3 work. They found out it's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Not This Law

Despite the challenges for lawyers, even pornstars need them. Copyright infringement, invasion of privacy, and breach of confidentiality agreement are common causes of action.

Of course, there is a line between advocacy and are-you-kidding-me? Prenda Law attorneys crossed way over that line.

They bought copyrights to adult films, baited people to download them, and then sued them. Making their own adult movies didn't help the lawyers.

They were disbarred, prosecuted, or worse. One lawyer died.
