FCC Forum on Future AI Communications

By George Khoury, Esq. on November 12, 2018 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

The current FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai, has announced that the agency will host a public forum at its Washington D.C. headquarters on artificial intelligence and machine learning, at the end of the month. Prediction: It will be a steaming hot pile of obsoleteness.

The announcement is also a call to those in the industry who may want to participate or even provide demonstrations on how machine learning and AI can make an impact on the communications of today. Pai was quoted explaining that the commission wants to explore what AI and machine learning mean to the future of communication. Prediction: Expect corporate infomercials.

Communications on the Horizon

Interestingly, the FCC isn't just looking to explore the current state of AI and machine learning, but is hoping to understand what the future may hold, and probably where the FCC will fit into it all.

The event is being billed as an educational forum that will allow experts to teach the FCC and the public about emerging technologies and what impacts the communications marketplace can expect as a result. Unfortunately, while this sounds like a great idea, tech insiders are likely questioning just what in the world Pai is thinking, as the invitation seems like a complete communication failure.

A Failure to Communicate?

What is actually on tap for the event is currently unknown.

What is known is that the FCC is trying to bring together AI and machine learning industry experts, whatever that vagary means, on rather short notice, and the week after a national holiday would have taken place, cutting into prep time those experts would have. However, for Ajit Pai, this sort of out of touch-ness is almost his hallmark, so ... Prediction: Maybe we shouldn't have such high hopes for a fruitful forum.
