UpCounsel, a service that matches small to mid-sized businesses with attorneys, was started in 2012. CEO Matt Faustman stated that he co-founded UpCounsel to provide affordable legal services to small business owners, reports Small Business Trends. So how does it work?

Business owners log-on to UpCounsel and post a free job listing seeking particular legal work. Lawyers who have registered, and passed the screening process, are then able to bid and submit quotes on each job. The business owner makes a selection, and the job is managed and paid through UpCounsel.

It seems like a pretty good set up. Maybe the best thing about UpCounsel is that small business owners can know up front how much particular services will cost. They not only can make a decision based on cost, but UpCounsel allows lawyers to create a profile page full of great marketing information, and even allows users to rate the services you provided.

Thinking about giving your small practice a boost and trying UpCounsel? Here are some ways to stand out from the rest:

1. First Impressions

First impressions are everything. The first thing a prospective client will see is a profile picture. Make sure the picture is professional that is, the quality of the photo, and how you are dressed and groomed in the photo. Try to look like a trustworthy lawyer.

2. Sell Yourself

Your bio is your chance to tell people why they should pick you. Highlight special skills, your amazing personality and stellar success record.

3. Make it Work

In your UpCounsel profile, you have the ability to list your practice areas. You may find work by someone contacting you because of a relevant practice area, so make sure that you list all that you are competent in.

4. Fair Price

You can go online right now and check out what other lawyers are charging for consultation and services. So, if you don’t know where to start, do some research and come up with a competitive hourly rate. Don’t price yourself too high, or too low from the get go. Aim to be in the middle.

5. Ask for Reviews

Once you done a spectacular job on your UpCounsel assignments, ask your clients to write a review for the site. Reviews are helpful, and sometimes deal-makers (or breakers), and having a recommendation on your site will only help you get more business.

Right now UpCounsel is available in California but has plans to expand to Oregon, Washington, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts. If UpCounsel is not available in your area, you can use these tips to beef up your Yelp or LinkedIn profile.
