Mobility Tips for the Legal Road Warrior

By William Vogeler, Esq. | Last updated on

Lawyers today carry around computers more powerful than those that sent men to the moon.

The NASA guidance system filled a room, yet now people can put a GPS device in their pocket. By comparison, the moon shot machines literally had the computing power of a pocket calculator.

It's just a footnote in the astonishing evolution of technology. But it's also a reminder that technology moves on -- especially mobile tech.

To-Go Order

If you don't have the latest tech toy, don't worry. Some of the essentials are $10-$15 cheap. Here are a few to add to your to-go bag:

  • A compact surge protector
  • A laptop lock
  • A keyring flash drive
  • A portable power bank
  • A phone charger for your car

You can find some of these things at a gas station, if not Google for the CVS or Rite Aid near you. Of course, these days, the best things in life are almost free software, so you might want to search your device's app store for apps on-the-go.

The most profitable apps for lawyers, naturally, are billing apps. With them, you and your hand-held device can turn into a billing machine.

"Staying up-to-date" is the mantra of mobile lawyers. They are constantly checking texts, email, news feeds, calendar notifications, etc.

Fortunately, software engineers are doing some of that for you. Microsoft's Outlook, for example, will soon allow users to send and pay bills directly in their email.

In today's robot world, you can take your digital assistant on the road with you. Alexa can track billable hours for you, too.

Alexa and other digital assistants may not not free. But at least you don't have to buy them a ticket to the moon.
