Nokia Files New Patent Infringement Complaint Against Apple
The smart phone war is being waged in the courts, and the Nokia-Apple battle is heating up.
The two phone manufacturers have been engaged in a patent dispute since 2009. Adding to the never-ending litigation, Nokia has added seven more allegedly infringed patents to its list this week.
The new complaints follow a ruling by a U.S. trade panel judge dismissing five others.
Cell phone manufacturing is a Nokia-Apple dominated market. Even though Nokia is slipping, it is the leading hardware manufacturer in number. However, Apple is the leading hardware manufacturer in revenue.
Over 40 Nokia patents, and 13 Apple patents, are currently in dispute, reports PCMag. The patent war is essentially Nokia's attempt to maintain its dominance.
Nokia charges that Apple is infringing on its patents "in virtually all of its products," reports The Wall Street Journal. The company further alleges that the disputed patents are being used create some of Apple's "key features."
What's fascinating about the Nokia-Apple patent dispute is that it plays into the current smart phone operating system battle between Apple, Microsoft, and Google.
Last month, Nokia decided to drop its own operating system and focus on its hardware technology. It chose to start equipping its phones with Microsoft's system as opposed to Google's Android, giving Microsoft a much needed boost in the operating system market.
The outcome in the Nokia-Apple patent dispute will certainly be impacting the manufacturer's ability to remain so large. In turn, the dispute will also help determine the future of who creates smart phone operating systems, their availability, and new technology.
