Tablets Galore! CES Kicks Off with New Gadgets

By Jason Beahm | Last updated on

Tablets, baby.

The Consumer Electronics Show is rolling in Las Vegas and tablets are everywhere. The conference is expected to bring in 120,000 people, who are hungry to see the next big thing in technology.

While the iPad was clearly the tech item of 2010, Apple has lots of competition this year. Android-based tablets are clearly going to be a big trend. Among the 2011 tablets are manufacturers Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Cisco. But the CES tablets include newer, more surprising arrivals, such as BlackBerry and Vizio, which is best known for flat panel TV's.

Tablets are likely to explode in growth over the coming year. U.S. tablet sales will hit 24 million in 2011, up from 10.3 million in 2010, according to Forrester Research cited by Forbes

They expect the massive growth to continue into 2012, with about 35 million units in the election year.  By 2015, they expect 44 million units sold. Forrester anticipates that by 2015, 82 million U.S. consumers will be using tablets, nearly one-third of online consumers. But don't expect any iPad killers. Forrester still anticipates that Apple will be leading the pack.

"...the lion's share will be iPads, and despite many would-be competitors that will be released at CES, we see Apple commanding the vast majority of the tablet market through 2012."

So while most people in Las Vegas are excited by all the new CES tablets, there is one group of people that are a bit apprehensive: IT specialists. They're going to be the ones expected to integrate the tablets into their places of work, which according to eWeek, may prove quite challenging.
