Top 5 iPhone Apps for Lawyers on the Go

By Cynthia Hsu, Esq. | Last updated on

Look around a courthouse, high-rise office building or over-priced martini bar and it seems you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an attorney glued to their smartphones.

Chances are, you're one of them. Which ultimately leads to the question, what are some top apps for lawyers? Fear not, for Greedy Associates has got you covered.

  1. Skype. Skype is useful not only if you're an attorney, but if you are one you can end up easily using the app to make some free phone calls. Skype offers free phone calls via a Wi-Fi connection. You can call other Skype users for free, but calling landlines or cell phones will cost you some change. Though, if you decide to use Skype abroad, it can probably end up saving you hundreds of dollars.
  2. Dropbox. Dropbox lets you sync your laptop, home computer, work computer and phone so that you have shared access to your files at any time. And, it updates automatically - once you save a file on your home computer, for example, Dropbox will update the file on any of your other synced devices once they're turned on.
  3. Documents To Go. This powerful little app can make your iPhone or iPad turn into a mobile office, with its ability to view, edit and create Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. You can also use Documents To Go to edit Google Docs, and sync with Dropbox.
  4. Evernote. Evernote lets you take notes. Lots of notes. And, in untraditional formats. You can clip website pages into Evernote, take photos of things you want to remember, and snap up photos of business cards. Evernote can keep all of these things in one place, and lets you organize it and search through your notes.
  5. Wikipanion. You'll probably never cite to Wikipedia in your legal brief, but let's face it: if you hear about something that you want to learn more about, what's one of the first tools you reach for? Wikipedia! And, with Wikipanion, you can churn out some quick cursory research via Wikipedia in an instant.

The above list of apps is definitely not a conclusive list, but it's a start - and it provides a glimmer of what top apps for lawyers are out there.

And remember that many applications that are available on the iPhone or the iPad are available on other smartphones as well, such as Android-based phones. But, not all apps run on all phones. Plus, applications may (or may not be) free. But if you just keep billing and get that bonus, you'll be able to afford a boatload of apps, so get back to it.
