Voice-Control Hasn't Even Reached Puberty

By William Vogeler, Esq. on September 26, 2018 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

You know that awkward moment in puberty when a boy's voice cracks?

That hasn't happened yet with voice-controlled devices. Developers say the technology is still in its infancy.

But that puberty moment is coming soon. Just ask Josh.

Josh AI

Like Alexa, Josh is an emerging voice in smart-home technology. He sounds smarter, however, and that could be a little awkward.

Amazon's Alexa dominates the market for smart home devices. But Josh AI has already won awards because he handles more complex instructions.

There is competition for the next big thing in voice-control, like Control4 and Savant. They are "Alexa on steroids," Forbes writer Jamie Gold said in her report on the 2018 CEDIA Expo for home technology.

"I believe voice activation is just in its infancy as we learn to interact with inanimate objects the same way we do with each other," observed West Hollywood-based architect Dean Larkin.

Still Growing

We're not talking about security cameras and smart phone controls anymore; that was 2017. Today, Larkin says consumers want the "wow" technology like voice-activated blinds.

Tomorrow's smart house won't be a patchwork of devices, but an artificially intelligent house that will anticipate your commands. It will control lighting, temperature, entertainment systems, appliances, security, garage doors, and more.

Of course, nobody wants to live in a house controlled by Hal. If you don't know his voice, you don't remember 2001.
