Hiring Notice: Third Circuit Court of Appeals Hiring Attorneys

By Robyn Hagan Cain on September 02, 2011 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

If you’ve ever dreamed of getting up close and personal with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals - the place where corrupt politicians go to have their sentencing dreams crushed - today is your lucky day.

The Third Circuit anticipates hiring attorneys for one-year terms beginning in September 2012. Licensed attorneys, third-year law students, and recent graduates may apply.

Unlike the better-known federal judicial clerkship, this position is a staff attorney clerkship. Staff attorneys serve the court at-large rather than in the chambers of individual judges.

In the Third Circuit, staff attorneys draft memoranda, opinions and orders to assist in disposition of appeals and other proceedings before the court, primarily in the areas of habeas corpus, civil rights, immigration, and appellate jurisdiction. The clerkship focuses on federal constitutional law and procedures.

Staff attorneys will have an opportunity to develop expertise in federal appellate, civil, and criminal procedure, and familiarity with the laws of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and the Virgin Islands. If you're planning to practice in any of these jurisdictions, we suspect that firms would look kindly upon such experience.

While primarily a research and writing clerkship, the staff attorney position also involves some case management responsibilities. Applicants must have a strong academic background and demonstrated research and writing ability. Law review, moot court, clinic or internship experience is desirable. Course work or work experience in civil rights, post-conviction remedies, habeas corpus, criminal law, prisoner law, employment law, and immigration law is helpful.

The starting salary for entry level attorneys is $61,245.00, and the deadline for applications is Friday, October 21, 2011. All applications will be accepted through the OSCAR online clerkship application system.
