Sample Business Contracts: Even a Legal Pro Can Learn New Tricks

By Robyn Hagan Cain | Last updated on

We lawyers have lots of dirty little secrets.

While the non-lawyers in our lives thought that we spent law school learning how to practice the law, we really spent three years “learning how to think” and realizing what high school would have been like with legal access to alcohol.

What we didn’t learn while mainlining caffeine to keep up with cliques and study groups, (which, let’s admit, were one and the same), were the nuts and bolts of the law, like how to draft wills or business contracts.

Not that we really needed to burden ourselves with such trivial pursuits; every lawyer knows that there is boilerplate language in the real world.

Transactional agreements are not vehicles for lawyers to wax poetic on the spirit of the law; they are concise and precise. Most of us repeatedly poach our own legal language when drafting business contracts, but we don't have to limit ourselves to the words that we've written.

The FindLaw Corporate Counsel Contracts center has almost 5,000 archived business contracts, including a new batch of agreements from Fortune 500 companies.

This magical treasure trove of contractual language can be sorted by business name or contract type to help us compare, draft, and revise our contracts. And since these contracts are not protected by copyright, we can even borrow language from them.

Continuing legal education isn't the only place to learn about new tricks of the trade; reviewing sample business contracts drafted by the best lawyers in the country for the biggest businesses in the world is a great way to find new ideas that will save time and produce better results for clients.
