So You're Going to the 3rd Circuit: 5 Things to Do in Philly

By Gabriella Khorasanee, JD on February 19, 2014 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

If you're working on a case headed for oral arguments before the Third Circuit, then a trip to Philadelphia (if you're not already based there), is in store for you. I spent five years of my life in the City of Brotherly Love -- four years as an undergrad, and one year as a judicial clerk -- so I thought I'd share some things to do while you're in Philadelphia.

Leave the Gun, Take the Cheesesteak

I haven't lived in Philly since 2000, and yes, I am still missing Philly cheesesteaks. Now, most Philly guides will tell you that you need to go to Pat's or Geno's in South Philly -- they are wrong. I really don't know what all the fuss is about, I tried 'em and didn't like 'em.

My personal favorite is Jim's Steaks, and a truly good combo is beef (or chicken), mushrooms, onions and provolone. If you're more of a fine dining person, be sure to check out Laurel, Nicholas Elmi's (a/k/a the newest winner of the title "Top Chef") restaurant.

Visit the Sites

If you're a U.S. history buff, or constitutional law lover, then Philadelphia is the best city to visit (Boston, you're number 2). You can see Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell and Betsey Ross's house -- all while eating a street pretzel -- with mustard.

Don't Forget to Pay to Park

If you're going to drive in Philly, then be sure you pay for parking -- I mean, the Philadelphia Parking Authority had its own reality TV show. Better yet, use public transportation.

College Hunt -- For Your Kids

If you have children close to college-age, it may be worthwhile to check out some schools while you are in Philadelphia. Boasting almost 90 colleges and universities in the area, it's a great place to look.

Do as Rocky Did

Honestly, what better way to get amped for oral arguments before the Third Circuit than to run Rocky's route through South Philly and up the Philadelphia Museum of Art's iconic steps -- just make sure you're listening to "Gonna Fly Now" (or, if you want to go all Rocky 3, "Eye of the Tiger") while you do it.

Arguing before a circuit court takes a tremendous amount of preparation, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself while visiting Philadelphia. If you're based in Philly, then we envy your daily access to cheesesteaks, and hope you don't take it for granted.
