Marriage is a legal contract to which anyone over the age of majority is eligible, with some restrictions (for instance, a handful of states still do not recognize same-sex marriage). But state marriage laws provide lower age limits for minors who would like to tie the knot, typically requiring the consent of each minor's parent or legal guardian, while some states allow minors to marry with a court order under certain conditions. States place restrictions on marriage in order to ensure that each party is mature enough to make such an important commitment, while also discouraging "child brides" and other coerced unions.
