Bar associations are organizations for those involved in the legal profession. They exist on the national level, such as the American Bar Association (ABA), the state level, and the local level. Bar associations provide legal education programs (also known as CLE), meetings for lawyers in practice areas such as probate or family law, and social events where attorneys can gather together. Many bar associations also provide public service and participate in community service projects.
Typically, state and local bar associations have a lawyer referral service for anyone looking for legal help. Some bar associations also have members who agree to take on cases for people with low income at low cost or no cost (known as pro bono).
If you have legal problems and are looking for legal advice but don't know where to go to find the right lawyer, a bar association is a good place to start searching for legal services or legal assistance.

If you're having legal issues or need legal resources for a personal injury or workers' compensation case, a bar association is a good place to start to find the help you need. If you're a legal professional, a bar association will help you bond with other attorneys who can support your specialization. They can help further your legal education through CLEs and other programs. Check out the links above for all your bar association frequently asked questions (FAQ).
Can I Solve This on My Own or Do I Need an Attorney?
- Criminal cases, personal injury lawsuits, and child custody cases need an attorney's help
- Business contracts, estate planning, paperwork review, and real estate legal issues may benefit from an attorney's help
- Some small claims court, traffic tickets, name changes, neighbor disputes, and more minor legal issues can often be handled on your own
