NBC's Jay Gray Gets DUI After Party at Sandusky Attorney's House
The Penn State/Jerry Sandusky sex scandal has led to another arrest -- this time, for DUI. Jay Gray, an NBC News national correspondent covering the scandal, was arrested for drunken driving after apparently boozing it up with Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola.
Who is Jay Gray? He primarily works for NBC's affiliate news service, reporting for hundreds of NBC stations nationwide. With nearly two decades of experience, Gray is often recruited to report for NBC's Division I newscasts, "Today" and "Nightly News."
Covering the Sandusky scandal is a big deal, with dozens of famous news personalities vying for exclusive interviews with major players in the case.
That includes Jerry Sandusky's lawyer Joe Amendola, who invited reporters to a booze-fueled football party Dec. 11, celebrity gossip site TMZ.com reports.
Jay Gray's DUI was apparently the result of Gray getting "really drunk" at Joe Amendola's party, a source tells TMZ. A Pennsylvania state trooper stopped Gray for DUI about 1:45 a.m.
NBC and Gray declined to comment to TMZ about Jay Gray's DUI arrest, so we don't know Gray's version of events. But in general, a person charged with drunken driving can try to use a variety of defenses.
One such route is challenging the legitimacy of the traffic stop. It's not clear what defenses, if any, Gray may try to use.
Since Jay Gray's DUI arrest, the reporter seems to have disappeared from TV. But clips of his work survive on YouTube, like this recent Jay Gray report on the Sandusky scandal for NBC's Tulsa, Okla., affiliate KJRH-TV:
As for Joe Amendola, he's reportedly still shopping around yet another "exclusive" interview with his embattled client -- despite previous Jerry Sandusky interviews that may have done more harm than good. Jay Gray's DUI arrest probably means he's out of the running for the latest Sandusky exclusive.
